100,000th BOOK FOR TWO YEAR-OLD VICTORIANS

The 100,000th free children’s book was presented today as part of the Brumby Labor Government’s $2.1 million Young Readers Program.
Children and Early Childhood Development Minister Maxine Morand and State Member for Richmond, Richard Wynne, presented the milestone book to two-year-old Audrey Phan and her mother, Huong Nguyen, at the Maternal Child Health Centre in Fitzroy.
“This is a fantastic program which combines early childhood health checks for children with encouraging early reading,” Ms Morand said.
“The Young Readers Program began in March 2008, and 100,000 books have now been given to two year-olds across Victoria.
“Reading to a child is not only a great way to bond with your child – it stimulates the child to develop communication skills that will get them off to strong start at kindergarten and primary school.
“Brain development research has reinforced the importance of children’s learning from birth and I encourage all parents to read to their children from birth.”
Ms Morand said parents visiting a maternal child health centre are also given a free literacy information pack that includes a booklet and free DVD of rhymes when their child is aged four months.
“Through programs such as this, our Government is ensuring parents are supported during the early years of their child’s life when children are going through the most rapid development phase, giving them an even better start to life,” she said.
Member for Richmond Richard Wynne said it was great to see a program bringing together maternal and child health nurses, early childhood workers and Victorian children’s public librarians, working effectively locally.
Mr Wynne, also the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, joined Ms Morand in adding a new book to the program today – An Australian 123 of Animals - by renowned artist and illustrator Bronwyn Bancroft.
“Bronwyn Bancroft is a descendant of the people of Bundjalung, a nation that stretches from northern New South Wales to south-eastern Queensland,” Mr Wynne said.
“This is the first time a book by an Aboriginal author has been included in the program and I’m sure children receiving this book will love the fantastic illustrations.”
The Young Readers Program, which started in 2008, is a partnership between the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the State Library of Victoria and the Municipal Association of Victoria.
