NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR PREMIER’S VOLUNTEERING AWARDS

State Member for Richmond Richard Wynne today called on all Victorians to nominate individuals or groups that have made a real difference to their communities by entering the 2010 Premier’s Community Volunteering Awards.
Premier John Brumby said metropolitan and regional awards recognised volunteers or not-for-profit organisations in four categories with winners receiving $5,000 for their efforts.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of Victoria’s strong communities,” Mr Brumby said.
“We all have a role in creating a community where people respect themselves, respect others and respect our community.
“Without volunteers our kids wouldn’t have a footy coach, meals on wheels would never be cooked or delivered and our beaches wouldn’t be patrolled.
“These awards celebrate the contribution organisations and volunteers made to creating stronger communities and are an important part of the Victorian Government’s Respect Agenda.”
Nominations for the 2010 Premier’s Community Volunteering Awards can be made in the following categories:
- Community Volunteering Achievement Award
- Community Volunteering Leadership Award
- Young People’s Community Participation Award
- Community Volunteering New Technology Award
Community Development Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said now was the time for people to put forward individuals and community organisations that have gone above and beyond in their commitment to helping others.
“Each year more than a million volunteers work tirelessly behind the scenes to make our communities places where people are happier, healthier and more connected to one another,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.
“From those who have helped out in times of crisis to everyday acts of generosity, every volunteer is valued.
“The Awards are open to all not-for-profit groups and organisations that offer volunteers opportunities to get involved, with the Leadership Award open to individuals whose vision and commitment to volunteering has been outstanding.
“Winners will receive $5,000 and all finalists receive $500 to help them continue their work.”
Ms D’Ambrosio said the Awards would be presented in National Volunteer Week in May.
Nominations can be made by individuals, groups, community organisations, local government and local business organisations. Nominations close on Wednesday, 24th March, 2010. For further information, please call 1800 092 032 or visit www.awardsaustralia.com/pcva
