Richard Wynne MP: The East-West Transport Debate

I would like to inform you of the submission I have made to the Brumby Government’s east-west transport options review as your local MP.
You can download a copy here. (PDF Format)
As your local MP, I have made a submission arguing the following points:
• The most pressing challenge facing Melbourne’s transport system is the stress on the city’s rail network. To deal with this, a massive increase in investment public transport is required. The Eddington report’s recommendations on public transport – including the proposal for a 17km ‘metro’- style rail tunnel linking Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs with the CBD, Parkville and the inner-west should be embraced;
• The Victorian Government should also invest further in Port of Melbourne’s capacity and efficiency, and in the ability of Melbourne’s transport system to move more freight by rail rather road; and
• Due to the enormous economic, environmental and social costs involved, the proposal to build a road tunnel under Melbourne’s inner-northern suburbs should be re-examined only after these investments in public transport and Melbourne’s freight network have gone ahead.
Thanks to many local residents for their valuable contribution to this important debate – and I welcome your feedback on my submission.
