Richard Wynne MP is calling on local secondary schools to actively encourage the 17 and 18 year olds to sign up to vote now, so they don’t miss out on their democratic right to vote at the next federal election.

Recent changes to the Commonwealth Electoral Act by the Howard Government mean that eligible young people not already enrolled must enrol before the next federal election is called.

Funding to Support Darfur Volunteers in Fitzroy

Volunteers from the Darfur community of western Sudan will be linked to new opportunities for community involvement, thanks to new Victorian Government funding announced during National Volunteer Week.

The Minister for Victorian Communities, Peter Batchelor, today marked National Volunteer Week by visiting the Darfur Australia Network in Fitzroy and announcing the latest round of Victorian Volunteer Small Grants.

National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognise the huge contribution volunteers make across the state each year and runs from 14-20 May.

WYNNE RESULTS: Record $510 Million for Public and Social Housing

The Bracks Government today delivers on a key commitment to ensure all Victorians have access to affordable accommodation with a record $510 million investment in social and public housing.

Housing Minister Richard Wynne said the 2007-08 State Budget delivered the largest single investment ever made by a State Government in Australia in social and public housing.

“Added to existing commitments, this means that more than $1.4 billion will be invested in public and social housing in Victoria – building almost 4000 new dwellings, or the equivalent of a town the size of Castlemaine,” Mr Wynne said.

The 2007 Budget delivers on the Bracks Government’s commitments, building on the achievements of its first two terms and providing a framework for the Victoria’s future. This Budget delivers on the commitments made to Victorians to meet the challenges of the future and invest in the services that matter to their families.
