AUSTRALIAN-FIRST CANCER TREATMENT TO SAVE MORE LIVES

In an Australian first, cutting edge new radiotherapy technology at the Alfred Hospital will ensure cancer patients receive even better treatment and improved chances of survival.
Visiting the hospital today, Health Minister Daniel Andrews launched new state-of-the-art gated radiotherapy equipment at the Alfred’s William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre.
“The Brumby Government is investing in a comprehensive world-class centre and funding the latest advances in technology for detecting cancer early and saving lives,” Mr Andrews said.
“That is why we delivered $1.2 million for the Alfred Hospital to install this highly-sophisticated software and hardware that will provide gated radiotherapy for cancer patients. This new technology will see the William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre become the leader in the practice of gated radiotherapy in Australia.”
Mr Andrews said the Alfred Hospital will be the first in Australia to treat cancer patients using gated radiotherapy.
“Gated radiotherapy is used to counter the effects of organs that move due to breathing and normal stomach movements during radiation therapy,” he said.
“This is particularly beneficial for treating cancers around the chest, such as breast and lung cancers, and cancers around the abdomen, such as liver cancer.
“The existing technology forces specialists to treat wider margins of the disease to account for the movement of tumours within organs that move. So, this new technology will allow them to minimise these margins by delivering more targeted treatment, in turn allowing doctors to increase the dosage and improve control,” he said.
“The new technology is so advanced that it can switch the linear accelerator treatment unit on and off when the tumour is in a known position, thanks to special cameras, infra-red technology and 3D mapping. It is expected the new technology will result in significant benefits for cancer patients, including better targeting of radiation treatments, fewer radiation therapy sessions and the treatment of previously untreatable conditions.”
Conditions treated by the new technology will include cancers of the lung, breast, liver, gallbladder, bile duct and liver metastases.
Mr Andrews said the Brumby Labor Government’s $150 million Victorian Cancer Action Plan was a world-leader, outlining ambitious targets to increase cancer survival rates for Victorians by a further 10 per cent by 2015.
“About 70 Victorians receive a cancer diagnosis each day, and unfortunately cancer is everyone’s business,” he said.
“We are investing in innovative research, prevention and treatment strategies to improve care and thousands more Victorian lives, while providing the most compassionate and best supports to patients and their families at every point of their cancer journey.”
