EDUCATION WEEK: HELPING YOUR CHILD TO SHINE

Education is taking centre stage across the state this week as Victoria showcases the great work happening in kindergartens and schools during Education Week celebrations from May 17-23.

$8.6 MILLION TO HELP YOUNG HOMELESS CLIMB THE LADDER

A brand new facility for young homeless people, that will not only provide a home, but support and mentoring to help tenants get back on their feet, opened its doors on Hoddle Street in Collingwood today.

Housing Minister and State Member for Richmond, Richard Wynne, said the Brumby Government had contributed $4.4 million to the project, run by Ladder, a joint venture between the AFL Players’ Association and the AFL Foundation. Read more

SOCIAL HOUSING IN VICTORIA CONTINUES TO GROW WITH MORE TO COME

More than 1300 additional affordable homes for lower-income earners across Victoria were built or acquired in the 12 months to June 2008, as the Brumby Government and housing associations invested to provide more sustainable housing for those most in need. Total stock levels are now at 78,004 – an all time high for Victoria.

Details of the boost to housing numbers are described in the latest Office of Housing Summary of Housing Assistance Programs 2007-2008 report, published today.

Housing Minister and State Member for Richmond, Richard Wynne, said the annual report detailed the activities of the Office of Housing over the past financial year and provided a breakdown of the number of public housing and community housing homes. Read more

BRUMBY GOVERNMENT TO LAUNCH NEW ATTACK ON HOMELESSNESS

Housing Minister and State Member for Richmond, Richard Wynne, today signalled the start of sector-wide consultation to deliver a new strategy to tackle homelessness in.

Mr Wynne said with the Rudd Government naming homelessness as a national priority, it was an ideal time to deliver an ambitious strategy to break the back of homelessness, its causes and the issues that cause people to be trapped in a cycle many can find hard to break out of. Read more

Other local State Budget highlights

The 2007 Budget delivers on the Bracks Government’s commitments, building on the achievements of its first two terms and providing a framework for the Victoria’s future. This Budget delivers on the commitments made to Victorians to meet the challenges of the future and invest in the services that matter to their families. For the eighth consecutive year, the Bracks Government will deliver a Budget surplus, while upholding the AAA rating and investing record amounts in services and infrastructure.
